TOPIC:  EAT TO LIVE  by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

WHEN: Sundays April 3,10,17, and May 1 and 8.            
Sessions will begin directly after coffee hour and last about an hour.

Dr. Fuhrman is a board-certified family physician and nutritional researcher who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods.  Although "Eat to Live" is touted as a weight loss program, it is actually much more.  By replacing nutrient-deficient high calorie food with nutrient-rich high fiber food, this program can prevent or reverse many chronic and life-threatening medical conditions. Other 'side effects' besides losing weight are sleeping better, reversing signs of aging, feeling better physically and emotionally, and increased energy!

This will be facilitated by Sandy Gaunt and will include some of her favorite related topics, including sprouting, green smoothies, cleansing, and medicinal herbs.

It would be helpful to know how many would like to attend, so please place your name on the sign-up sheet at the back of the sanctuary if you’re interested. There will be a place to check if you would also like Sandy to order you a book from Amazon. It will save on shipping of we all order together.

According to the headlines and the economic statistics, things are improving, but it’s hard to see much evidence in northern Michigan. Food banks are delivering supplies as fast as they come in, the Shepherd’s Table is serving more meals than ever, and individual churches like ours are getting more and more requests for money for gas or heat or rent. Meanwhile, each of us takes a closer look at the budget to see where we can make cuts, knowing that higher utility bills are on their way. What can we do?

That’s where the multiplier factor comes in! Separately, our donations of a dollar or two look pretty meager, but if each family in the church gave a dollar, and if every church in our community did likewise, Project Christmas and the Salvation Army would be overwhelmed with funds and goods that they could distribute to those in need. Can you commit to giving up some small treat? A cup of coffee? A newspaper or magazine? Set that money aside and add it to our mission fund for the month of November and let’s see what a difference we can make.

And don’t forget.... Project Christmas is counting on us to provide new children’s books when they create Christmas for over 1200 families on December 11. The table is already set up at the back of the sanctuary, so you can bring in books any time. If you want to help at Project Christmas, see Karma

I've just been notified by Rev. Keith Titus that the organizational meeting for the October2-8 Re-Member adult mission trip to Pine Ridge Reservation has been scheduled for3 pm on Sunday, August 1 at Gaylord First Congregational Church (218 W. 2nd Street, 1 block south of Main at corner of Old-27). Anyone interested in participating must have submitted the $350 registration fee and a completed 2010 Registration Agreement to me a week in advance of that meeting. 

Specifically, please review the logistical and cultural background information at the following link: 
http://www.re-member.org/docs/2010%20Registration%20Packet.pdf and complete the registration forms on pages 12 and 14-15: Form 2(a) Adult Medical, Form 3 Release and Waiver of Liability, and Form 4 Skills Assessment. These forms and the registration fee should be routed through me, so that I can then complete the Group Organizer paperwork and submit all of our group's paperwork together to Re-Member.

There are still scholarships available to cover registrations fees for two individuals. Please contact me right away if you are interested in applying for one.

I hope that you will prayerfully consider this exciting opportunity to experience the cultural richness of our Lakota sisters and brothers and be of practical help with their ministries.

Carol Reynolds as our pastor and teacher. This is an important step that marks the conclusion of a process that began with the formation of a Search Committee so many months ago. The Association takes the lead in this ceremony because a pastor’s official standing as an ordained minister of the UCC rests with the association.

 

Very shortly we will be sending out invitations to all our members and friends, as well as other clergy in the Cadillac area, all the churches in the United Northern Association, representatives from the Michigan Conference, and Pastor Carol’s family and friends.

 

The Service of Installation will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (to allow folks from distant churches to get here), with supper to follow.

For these individuals and their families, what to do next is a real challenge. In 2007, a local group of retired teachers, parents, and volunteers got together to see if they could provide some type of meaningful employment for those adults. There is a real need to provide employment for special needs adults, not only in Cadillac, but throughout Michigan. 

 The After 26 group was originally inspired by a Chesaning restaurant called the Junction of Hope. It is the first non-profit 501(c)(3) restaurant in the country, and their purpose is to hire special needs people in their community. Following their example, the After 26 group filed for non-profit status with the federal government, and received that in the summer of 2008. This was the vital first step in providing employment for these adults. 

 The After 26 board of directors is now on a path to open the After 26 Café and Unique Gift Shop. The next step is to raise funds for the opening. Success will be achieved with the employment of special needs adults. One visit to the Junction of Hope Restaurant in Chesaning clearly shows what a job means to the special needs people that work there. It builds their self-esteem and helps them become happy, productive members of their community.The biggest challenge is to raise the estimated opening costs of $50,000. Money raised will be received from private grants and individual donations. What is the UNA and why are they coming to First Congregational Church? There are many members of our church who aren’t familiar with how our church is linked to other UCC churches, so here’s a chance to find out. On June 6th, Rev. Keith Titus, the moderator of the UNA will be visiting our church with two messages. One has to do with the functioning of the United Northern Association and the other has to do with “Re-member,” a program that organizes trips to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. 



Following the service, we will be sharing a simple lunch with Keith (and also Patty Leahy, treasurer of the UNA). We will serve soup and they will bring bread, and while we eat, we will exchange information and get to know one another better.
